SPEED SMELLING: “AN AMERICAN IN PARIS”
FOREWORD
It is an art, several thousand years old, whose works are worn directly on the skin by millions of men and women throughout the world. Intimate signature, memorable wake, haven of comfort, these men and women say it: the art of perfumery has become, more than ever, necessary for our balance.
If perfume moves us so much, it’s because it binds us. To our memories, to our fantasies, to our desires, to our intimacy, finally to the world: the olfactory work is THE ultimate social network.
The perfumers’ canvases and brushes are invisible. Their colors are the hundreds of ingredients in their palette: molecules, natural, with infinite combinations.
THE EXHIBITION
The 13 perfumes created by the perfumers of the composition house IFF will be exhibited at the Atelier des Rives. Note: the meeting with Julien Rasquinet and Copine Brasset, Scent Design Manager, on September 22 from 5 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.
SPEED SMELLING 2022: “AN AMERICAN IN PARIS”
With this Speed Smelling (“carte blanche” creations), our Parisian perfumers are now paying homage to our American roots. With “An American in Paris”, they build improbable bridges between the two shores of the ocean. Their poetic creations, full of humor and surprises, also pioneering, are rooted in the long tradition of fine French perfumery, sometimes even from Grasse. With them, you will travel aboard a breathtaking transatlantic, from the fertile lands of Grasse to the skyscrapers of New York, from the immense plains of the American West to a romanticized Paris. Enjoy the ride!
IFF, AMERICAN ROOTS
IFF is the world leader in the creation of perfumes. Our roots are in New York: it is there that our master perfumers, Bernard Chant, Ernest Shiftan, Joséphine Catapano, Sophia Grojsman, Carlos Benaïm, artists acclaimed by amateurs, have created the greatest perfumes of the American continent. Far from the spotlight, these olfactory artists were the authors of a wildly innovative, powerful, liberating perfumery, emancipated from European tutelage.
To do this, they drew on the limitless imagination of IFF researchers to find the molecules and technologies that allowed the growth of this great perfumery.
NOBODY
The epic perfume of the Odyssey Alexandre Helwani x Bruna Vettori.
A proposal by Olivia Bransbourg
” It’s nobody my name. » Odyssey, IX, 365
“…it is necessary that, loaded with robust bonds, I remain motionless …” Odyssey, XII, 153
Fifth opus of ATTACHE MOI, PERSONNE is a perfume learned from the essences of the Odyssey. An entirely natural olfactory work, the beginnings of which will be unveiled as part of the Parcours Rives de la Beauté.
PERSON is part of the continuity of the Jardins Promis project, initiated by Laurent Derobert at the request of the Ministry of Culture for New Worlds, which intends to offer a botanical reading of the Odyssey from its so-called plant.
Through this plural collaboration, mixing visual artists, musicians, botanists and intellectuals, an informal collective has been formed. PERSON the perfume-epic, is the culmination of these dialogues.
This olfactory nostos, imagined by Olivia Bransbourg and created by perfumer Alexandre Helwani alongside an installation by artist Bruna Vettori, is an attempt to think of the Odyssey differently.
THE SPIRIT OF LEE MILLER
A French artist living in London, Misia-O’ is not only an accomplished photographer, a master’s student at the prestigious Royal College of Art, but also an artisan perfumer whose unique creations encapsulate the essence of her photographic subject.
The whole spirit of Misia-O’ resides in its singular gaze posed on the world as a declaration of love in the face of the diversity of beings. An ode to joyful difference, to the strength of being oneself. Highly sensitive, almost sensual perception of an artist photographer who knows how to intoxicate us with images and also with scents. At each exhibition, Misia-O’ creates olfactory atmospheres, another way of perceiving the unspeakable.
His series Different Shades of… (Different shades of…) has been exhibited in Arles since 2019, and for which she received the Jury Prize at the Salon des Beaux Arts in 2021, devoting her talent as a photographer to Different Shades of Yellow. This project questions the many connotations and prejudices linked to the perception of colours. The study of black, yellow, red and white refers to the chromatic palette of human skin and signs an aesthetic of human diversity.
THE EXHIBITION
Misia-O’ inaugurates here a first series of portraits devoted to women artists eclipsed by their titles of muses.
” I discovered the works of Lee Miller at eleven years old. My mother had bought me a surrealist book with solarized portraits that seemed magical to me, and Lee’s “Fire Masks” intrigued me. This led me to discover surrealism and my love of photography and the 1930s. Also, and just as importantly, I admire his talent and can identify with his free spirit and his style of photography. She proves that it is entirely possible to combine intelligence, beauty and talent, because she achieved it in the 1930s and 40s, an era notorious for not giving women artists the credit they deserved. His legacy is deeply inspiring, and it is an honor to honor him. »
About Lee Miller
After being discovered by Conde Nast in New York in the 1920s, Lee Miller became one of Vogue’s favorite models and later the model for famous photographers and artists such as Steichen, Cocteau, Picasso and Man Ray. She went behind the lens, opened her first studio in Paris in 1930 and became a portrait, advertising and fashion photographer for numerous magazines over the following decades.
Lee Miller’s good looks, connections to famous artists, and perceived role as a “muse” have often overshadowed his incredible accomplishments as a surrealist, photographer, and war correspondent with American forces during World War II. In the latter part of her life, Lee Miller turned to surrealist cooking at her home in Farleys, England, where her archive is kept and managed by her son Antony Penrose and granddaughter Ami Bouhassane.
