Often, a visit to the hair salon will make you come out with an elegant feeling and a happy heart. But for one woman from Hyderabad, regular visits to the salon led to a medical complication and the possibility of a stroke. The doctor she sought treatment with revealed that her condition was called ‘beauty parlor stroke syndrome’. It was caused because a crucial blood vessel supplying the brain was pressurized when she tilted her neck back for a hair wash in a beauty salon.
According to Hyderabad neurologist Dr Sudhir Kumar, the woman reported dizziness, nausea and vomiting. The symptoms appeared when she had her hair washed at a beauty salon. She was taken to a gastroenterologist, who treated her symptomatically.
Beauty salon #Stroke Syndrome
1. I recently saw a 50 year old woman with symptoms of dizziness, nausea and vomiting, which started when she washed her hair with shampoo at a beauty salon. Initially, she was taken to a gastroenterologist, who treated her symptomatically.#Medtwitter

However, when the woman’s symptoms worsened, with her imbalance developing while walking, she was referred to Dr Kumar. His MRI showed an infarction in the right postero-inferior cerebellar territory. Simply put, blood flow to the area of the brain that helps movement and coordination functions was impaired. A magnetic resonance angiogram (MRA) further showed that the woman had left vertebral hypoplasia. This means his vertebral artery (which supplies blood to the brain and spine) was underdeveloped.
2. Symptoms did not improve, the next day she developed a slight imbalance while walking. She was referred for my review. She had mild right cerebellar signs. Brain MRI revealed infarction in the right posterior inferior cerebellar territory, MRI angiography showed left vertebral hypoplasia

The doctor diagnosed her with “beauty parlor stroke syndrome involving the right PICA or posterior inferior cerebellar artery. The cause of the condition was the woman hyperextending her neck over the salon wash sink while washing her hair.
Beauty parlor stroke syndrome refers to this activity and the complication it could cause to the brain exactly. According to stroke specialist Richard Bernstein, interviewed by The Atlantic, the syndrome “is so rare that it’s a waste of time to worry about it”. Bernstein said the onset of the syndrome is not something to worry about. According to him, you are as safe from this condition at the hair salon as in your own bed.
