There is no fire at the Châteaulin market this Thursday morning. And yet, the firefighters are on a war footing. The Preven’ty truck, a unique device in France launched by the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (Sdis) of Finistère in 2019, usually scours schools. But he also allows himself stops in the city centers. Six to seven groups will enter the cockpit, fitted out inside a house and reproducing favorable conditions of fire or domestic accident.
12 p.m. Marie and her two children, Anne, 11, and Pierre, 6, go ahead. The cadet knows the machine well. He intends to repeat the exercise. “Fortunately the children are there. They manage to convince the older ones to test themselves,” smiles Dominique Guiot, trainer.
The smoke detector in the closet
In the truck, presentations of the smoke detector. The mother admits, a tad ashamed, her lack of caution: “At home, we only have a thermal detector”. “Well yes, the one for the smoke, you put it away on the shelves,” adds her eldest. Embarrassed smiles: “I don’t have too many excuses”, admits the mother.
For Magali Sanselme, this is not a special case: “The remark that we most often hear is: “The detector rings all the time, I disconnected it”. They just don’t take the time to find out why. Generally, it is the consequence of dead batteries or foreign bodies (dust or critters) in the case”.
“One mouth, one nose, two eyes”
In the event of a fire, take care to leave the space by closing the doors behind you. “And then who do we call? asks one of the firefighters. “The 27th!” “, Slingshot. Missed. It’s 18 or 112. And this mnemonic device: “A mouth, a nose, two eyes”, dictates Magali Sanselme.

As for domestic accidents, in France they are responsible for “one hospitalization every minute and are the leading causes of death among 1-14 year olds”. Overloaded electrical outlet, knife left out in the open, bleach within reach or hair dryer plugged into the sink… Dangers are everywhere.
Mission successful?
Adults are always more sure of themselves on this subject: “Grandparents, especially, say they don’t need it,” relates Dominique Guiot. Except they haven’t had kids for a long time. It’s good that they update their knowledge.
As for the young people, “we have some who have seen us at school, and who wish to try the exercise again when they meet us again. There is one who was so on the job that he brought out every trap for us, the triangle of fire… At 10 years old! At that moment, you tell yourself that the mission is successful”.
