Stade Rennes – Toulouse: Rennes ends in style before the break

A last one for the road. Before the winter break linked to the World Cup at the end of the year, Stade Rennes hosted Toulouse FC at Roazhon Park. Objective, to take the three points, and to continue one more meeting the unbeaten streak of 16 games without defeat before kick-off. To do this, Bruno Genesio had to do without Birger Meling (suspended), but got Kamaldeen Sulemana and Joe Rodon, both substitutes. Also back, Martin Terrier was established in Bruno Genesio’s 4-4-2, as were Wooh, Majer and Ugochukwu.

Bourigeaud still decisive

Well back in their match, Rennes missed the opportunity to take advantage of an exit error from Dupé, Kalimuendo losing an important ball (5^e). Bourigeaud then struck wide (10^e), after a good against Rennes. Toulouse responded on the counter as well, but Aboukhlal’s strike was too crushed (13^e). Wooh provoked a dangerous free kick (14^e), pushed back by the defense. Then Rennes opened the scoring on a goal from Bourigeaud, at the start of the action, after a relay with Gouiri then Majer, who from an outside found Bourigeaud at the far post. A control then a strike from the right on the left of Dupé allowed the SRFC to lead from the 25th^e minute of play. Passer 6 games in a row then scorer last week, the vice-captain was still decisive an 8^e consecutive game.

On its way, Rennes countered again and Terrier coming up the field sent a heavy strike forcing Dupé to save (26^e). Dominant, the SRFC saw a new counter stop by the referee, Keben injured remained on the ground. Enterprising, Rennes struck again through Gouiri (36^e), but Dupé made a good save. The SRFC failed to be surprised on a cross from Sylla taken over by Dallinga with a header, completely alone, but it was close. Bourigeaud still served by Gouiri could not find the frame (40^e). Aboukhlal saw his cross blocked and captured by Mandanda on the action that followed. On a free kick before the break, Theate was very close to taking back a ball kicked by Majer (44^e), then Traoré on a good movement crushed his left shot too much, on target (45^e).

Surprised upon recovery

Without change on the return from the locker room, Rennes attacked through Gouiri, served by Traoré, but quickly caught up (49^e). Majer then saw his shot repelled by a sumptuous save from Dupé (52^e). But the SRFC was punished on the first dangerous action of this second period. Van Den Boomen saw Mandanda take his shot for a corner, and on the following kick, a ball put back in the box was not cleared and ended up at the feet of Dallinga who beat the Rennes goalkeeper (55^e). 1-1.

On a constructed action, Traoré volleyed a ball left by Bourigeaud, but the ball passed just above Dupé’s cage (56^e). A minute later, it was the good one. On a counter well led by Gouiri, Majer inherited the ball and shifted Terrier. The shot from number 7 was again pushed back by Dupé but Kalimuendo followed to finish the job (58^e). 2-1, and another fright for Stade Rennes on a long shot from Chaïbi that Mandanda deflected on his bar (59^e)! Rennes went back on the attack in this unbridled match and Terrier saw his shot blocked by the defense (60^e). Terrier again, amused Nicolaisen, and served Truffert who by law obliged Dupé to parade (63^e). On the following corner, Traoré’s recovery was very close to being taken over by Theate (64^e). Toulouse was also enterprising, but imprecise. Xeka, Tait, and Doku replaced Majer, Ugochukwu, and Kalimuendo. The end of the match was more jerky, Toulouse pushing to equalise. Rennes finally kept the score.

To end the first part of the season, Stade Rennes won at its Roazhon Park, extending its unbeaten streak, with 17 games without defeat. At the international World Cup break, Rennes is third in Ligue 1.
