While it is well known that pimples cannot be crushed, other beauty routines are also more harmful than beneficial for the skin.

Some beauty routines can be harmful to the skin. We reveal to you those which are to be avoided.

The skin is a sensitive organ. However, it is sometimes put to the test, because we want it devoid of impurities, with fine pores and a silky appearance. Some beauty routines are real challenges and damage the skin over time. We reveal to you which ones should be abandoned urgently.

1. TikTok trends

People looking for the latest miracle product to have glowing skin often refer to TikTok. And there is nothing surprising in this: every week, a new method that is supposed to rid the skin of impurities and put an end to skin dryness appears there. Except some TikTok trends are dangerous, others are just useless. However, none of these tips are suitable for all skin types. Dermatologists are best able to advise on the most suitable treatment.

2. Overly aggressive treatments

Let’s remind skincare addicts, who indulge in a ten-step beauty routine every night, that you have to be light-handed! Repeated too often, peels may help get rid of pimples in the short term, but end up, in the long run, destroying the skin barrier. Coarse-grained mechanical scrubs should be totally banned for the face (they can nevertheless be used for the body). We prefer a chemical scrub with fruit acids (AHA or BHA), once or twice a week, which will have an effect on the skin, without causing any damage.

3. Lack of hygiene

After the excess of hygiene, we move on to the lack of hygiene… household linen. Indeed, bacteria, residues of beauty products and other dead skin cells proliferate quickly on the pillow, towels and brushes. When they come into contact with the skin of the face, they can give rise, among other things, to pimples and irritations. This is why they should be washed regularly. Brushes for liquid products should be washed once a week, others once a month.

4. The side sleeping position

Certainly, it is not easy to influence the way he sleeps. Side sleepers are at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to wrinkle formation. Just the pressure exerted on the face by the pillow causes wrinkles. Added to this is the force of gravity. A pillow placed under the knees or around the sides of the body can help when adopting a sleeping position on your back.

5. Expired products

You refuse to consume a yogurt that has been expired for eight days, while you have been using your vitamin C serum for ages? Not great, even potentially dangerous. Most creams and serums will keep for about a year after opening (see open jar symbol). But some active ingredients such as retinol and vitamin C only act, in most cases, for three months. After this time, they are useless. If you go well beyond the expiry date, irritation and redness may appear.

Care should be taken not to use cosmetic products after their expiry date.
