The dry skin, the regretful tan, the imperfections that multiply. The start of winter is clearly not the best time for the glow on top of Beyonce that we hope for all year. Winter is always a time of complicated balance, you have to adapt her skincare routinegive your skin time to recover from this sudden change, but above all review your basics in terms of makeup.

We know that healthy skin is already half the job, but good looks wake up especially with make-up (as light as it is) suitable and well made. In order not to miss any of the essential steps to follow for a super glowy and fresh makeup, we asked advice from an expert: Carisa Janes, founder of the vegan and cruelty free cosmetics brand Hourglass (freshly landed in France at Bon Marché Rive Gauche and on Sephora.fr) was kind enough to enlighten us.

How to prepare your skin for a healthy glow makeup?

For a successful make-up, nothing beats a ready and prepared skin and it goes above all through a nourished and hydrated skin. Basically, don’t neglect your skincare routine. Especially in winter ! Carisa Janes is formal on the subject: “I think that perfectly hydrated skin is the best foundation for successful make-up, everything goes through that!”. Good gestures include a tight routine morning and evening, a serum, an eye contour and a care cream for the face. To be adapted according to your needs, because each skin is different.

For those who want to go further (and treat themselves to a moment of pleasure) there are institute treatments that can help skin keep shape in winter. This is particularly the case of the new Repulp protocol, a 45min treatment offered at the Facekult studio (Bon Marché Rive Gauche and rue d’Aboukir in Paris). It aims to restore radiance, suppleness and shape to the face via a series of massage techniques (derived from acupressure) coupled with the use of suitable serums and oils.

What are the essential steps for healthy-looking makeup?

For successful makeup, there are a few steps to follow. Carisa Janes reveals the ones she considers essential:

  • Step 1 – apply a primer. “To smooth and blur pores, nothing beats a good primer.” For the desired effect to be successful, we choose a primer that blurs but does not obstruct! Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer does the job perfectly. Formulated without oil, its texture is light and provides a fresh finish.
  • Step 2 – choose a foundation adapted to your skin. “It can be a liquid foundation or a stick if that’s what works best. At Hourglass, our Ambient Soft foundation has the particularity of capturing the light. We use a technology that captures the surrounding light to reflect it, this allows the skin to have that smooth look that we sometimes look for with Instagram filters! If you prefer a lighter complexion, you can use the Concealer Vanish Herbrush which is our world bestseller. A touch under the eyes or on areas with imperfections and it’s all good.”
  • Step 3 – the highlighter. “The highlighter powder will bring out the glow and give that good-looking look that we all look for in winter! It’s a really necessary step.”
  • Step 4 – we fix everything with spray. “Using a fixing spray will allow the skin to stay hydrated without the oily skin effect.”
  • Step 5 – we illuminate with a touch of color. “ It’s the final touch that will really give the impression of glow on top! We add a touch of color on the cheeks, light it should not be overdone, as well as on the lips. A tinted balm or fresh lip gloss (like Hourglass’ Phantom Volumizing Glossy Balm) will do just fine.”
