the October 6, 2022 the government presented its Energy sobriety plan. A process in which Expanscience laboratories ofEpernon (Eure-et-Loir) have been involved for a very long time. In fact, it is part of the DNA of this company, which has been manufacturing the famous Mustela.
The prefect of Eure-et-Loir, visiting the site, recently praised this approach in terms of energy savings, decarbonization and employee training.
Become a positive impact company

Expanscience laboratories specialize in the treatment ofosteoarthritis and the skin care with in particular its Mustela which has survived the decades since it was born in 1950. The laboratories set up in Eure-et-Loir in 1957.
Expanscience laboratories define themselves as a ” company with a mission“, labeled B-Corp (for Benefit Corporation), which certifies companies with a positive societal and environmental impact. To date, more than 2,600 companies are certified in more than 60 countries and 150 different sectors.
As such, we have long been committed to our ecological transition. We participate fully and actively in the Energy Sobriety Plan presented by the Government. These measures echo the implementation of our CSR plan, impACT, which aims to continue reducing our negative impacts in order, by 2030-2040, to become a company with a positive and regenerative impact.
Already 15 years of effort

If the search for natural products, respect for the environment and well-being are already well anchored in the genes of the house, it has been fifteen years since Expanscience moved up a gear to reduce its consumption. energy and the impact of its activities on the environment.
Actions which resulted in a reduction of 21% and 33% of its respective consumption of electricity and gas per hundred units produced. Carbon intensity has fallen by 5% in three years at group level.
The company also buys 100% renewable electricity on its Epernon site since 2018.
Expanscience laboratories
■ 4 activities: dermo-cosmetics, rheumatology, dermatology, cosmetic active ingredients (notably based on avocado with its unit in Peru or passion fruit where it has developed exclusive and patented processes).
■ 2021 revenue of €287.2 million, 74% of which is generated internationally.
■ 1098 employees with fourteen subsidiaries
■ 3.2% of turnover invested in research and development (50 employees in Epernon).
Three angles of attack to go further

Expanscience laboratories want to go even further in their energy sobriety actions by focusing their policy on three main areas:
■ Energy: 10% reduction in gas consumption in 2023
The Epernon Innovation-Research and Development (IRD) and production site must reduce its gas consumption by 10% over a full year by 2023. three boilers main assets (-7%) and by reducing the heating temperature (-3%).
■ Decarbonization: speeding up ongoing projects
This decarbonization is already the subject of the CSR plan (corporate social responsibility) impACT of the laboratories which undertake to contribute to the achievement of planetary climate objectives and to act on scopes (measurements of greenhouse gas emissions) 1-2-3.
The objective at the Expanscience industrial site is to reduceat least 40% of its broadcasts greenhouse gas (between 2019 and 2030 precisely). An approach that is accelerating with the purchase of green gas (10% in 2023 and 20% in 2024).
We are also examining an ADEME file where the idea is to produce hot water by recovering calories from cold production on the production and IRD site in Epernon, which would reduce 20% gas consumption and 20% greenhouse gas emissions over one year.
In this perspective, we also find the continuation of the energy saving approach already recognized by a certification ISO50001the study of alternative projects around the biomass and/or the micro-methanization, of the geothermal energy but also the development and strengthening of local sectors, particularly with local agricultural partners.
the solar is not excluded but not yet on the agenda, however, on the approximately 9 ha of the site (50,000 m2 of buildings) there is enough to consider a park.
■ Training: supporting employees
While individual actions are important, the Epernon laboratories also emphasize collective actions through the training of site employees.
Some three hundred people work in Epernon, distributed in UPA (autonomous production units) including fifty in the IRD part.
By the end of the year, training in fresco of the climate will have been provided to employees and the laboratories are also raising their teams’ awareness of the major planetary issues, eco-gestures and also the use of the EcoWatt application.

Mustela wants to give back to the planet what it takes from it
With impACT, Mustela wants to reaffirm its commitment to parents and to helping future generations “grow up healthy on a healthy planet”.
Thus, Mustela is committed to giving back more to the planet than it takes from it, by contributing to planetary carbon neutrality by 2030.
Expanscience’s flagship brand is also continuing its progress towards zero waste and is committed to rethinking the packaging of its Mustela products according to the following approach: refuse, reuse (like its range of refill products) reincorporate and recycle/compost.
Mustela packaging is already 100% recyclable* and the brand has saved 145 tonnes of plastic and 65 tonnes of cardboard since 2010.
Finally, by 2025, Mustela will support a major cause related to parenthood, in each of the 14 subsidiaries of the Expanscience group.
Be supported by public authorities

The Epernon company intends to go as far as possible in its approach to energy sobriety and decarbonization, which does not prevent it from calling on the public authorities for support as for any economic player:
In the current context, we need to be accompanied by the public authorities, by financial support for decarbonization of course, but also by the facilitation of cooperation between the actors of a territory. We will thus be able to support local energies and the resilience of the territory and its actors.
For this 100% family-run company which was founded more than seventy years ago, with a fierce desire for independence and commitment, these new challenges are part of what it has always done in reality. since its creation.
Its products are present in a hundred countries with its flagship brand Mustela but also Baboo Botanicals, Plascédine 300… “the well-being of women and men is inseparable from the health of the planet she postulates. And she does not intend to deviate from it.
